Customer I helped was also running XP Home edition. With your suggestion I removed Norton AV and tried installing SP3 using the WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe (316MB) as a stand-alone. The laptop itself works fine and I have had no other issues, all updates (Security and the like) have worked fine, either by using Windows update or download after using Windows Ask a question and give support.
